Compressing (Zipping) Files

1. Install Winzip to the computer and launch the program by doubleclicking the Winzip icon. The Winzip window should appear.

NOTE: The window should not have any contents displayed at this time.
In this example we will compress the MS Word document "Example Doc".

2. Click the "New" button on the toolbar. The "New Archive" dialog box should appear.

3. Select the folder where you want the Zip file to be created in the "Create" window.

4. Type the name that you want to assign to the Zip file in the "File name" window.

5. Ensure the "Files of type" window is selected to "Zip files".

6. Click OK or press Enter. The "Add" dialog box should appear.

7. In the "Add" dialog box select the folder that contains the files to be compressed in the "Add" window.

8. Select the file or files to be compressed in the main window.

9. Click the Add button or press Enter. The Winzip window should again be in full view and file compression should be in progress.

NOTE : The progress of file compression can be monitored on the compression indicator which appears at the bottom of window when files are being compressed. When the red light is on, files are being compressed and when the green light is on, compression is complete (see Figure 1).

The Winzip window should now display the following (numbers used in parenthesis ( ) are used in conjuction with Figure 1):

Advanced features include Password protection for zipped files, Disk Spanning for Zip files too large to fit on a single floppy disk and self extracting files that may be extracted without the use of Winzip (Self extracting files may be unzipped on a system that does not have Winzip installed).
